Abigail Adams
Born Abigail Smith in Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1744, she had very little formal educational training, but was very well read. At the age of twenty, she married John Adams, who would become the second president of the United States.  Her letters to her husband while he served on the Continental Congress and in his subsequent political career show her concern for the rights of women and opposition to slavery.
