Griswold v.
Connecticut
(1965)
The head of Planned Parenthood in
Connecticut
was convicted under a state law that barred counseling married persons for the purpose of preventing contraception. Her conviction was overturned and the law struck down by the Supreme Court which ruled that although a right to "privacy" was not specifically spelled out in the Constitution, the right to privacy in marital relations was to be found in "penumbras" of constitutional protections contained in the First, Third, and Ninth Amendments.
