After the Civil War there was a time of hope known as Reconstruction.  The 13^th, 14^th and 15^th Amendments were added to the Constitution.  But white supremacy made a comeback.  In the South, whites who feared their loss of status and political power used the terror of the Ku Klux Klan and racist myths to keep former slaves in their place.
