The 1954 Brown decision opened the door to
other tests of Jim Crow segregation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had just become minister in Montgomery , Alabama .

His church was just down the street from the
state capitol building, where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederacy in 1961.
