Viola Liuzzo, a Detroit mother of five children, had come South to help with the march after seeing "Bloody Sunday" on television.  She was shot dead by Klansmen as she was transporting marchers back to Selma.  In shocked response, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act by a 14-1 margin.
