During "Mississippi Freedom Summer" in 1964, a thousand students came from the North to join Southern civil rights workers in a campaign for voter registration.  Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, both white Northerners, and James Chaney, an African American from Mississippi, were killed by the Klan after they went to investigate the burning of this church in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
